"Salute to Veterans" Telethon
Though not exactly a "telethon" the format was similar, as they did not solicit donations, but fielded requests for information. During the 12 hour timeframe employees and veterans manned a 15-person phone bank and answered questions concerning medical care, disability claims, GI Bill, and job training. Some people just called to talk, others called struggling with PTSD and still others called in crisis. It was not about answering every question. It was about getting into Utah’s living rooms and getting difficult conversations started. It was about being approachable and compassionate and making sure veterans know VA employees do care. Utah Veterans shared their personal stories on the help and support provided at the VA. Senators and Congressmen answered phones. Senator Orrin Hatch took a phone call from a man who consequently made an appointment with the Salt Lake PTSD team within a week of their conversation. The telethon was an admittance that the VA cannot do it alone and doesn’t want to. Our mission takes an entire community who is educated and committed to the same goal. Employees answered the call “literally” over 400 times that day. |
