Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Audiology and Speech Pathology Service (ASPS) is dedicated to three major goals:

  • providing high quality, comprehensive, state of the art clinical services to veterans with hearing, tinnitus, balance, speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders
  • supporting the training of developing audiologists and speech pathologists
  • conducting research to improve technologies, methodologies, treatment efficacy, and associated elements of patient care

Hours: 7:00 am – 5:30 pm Monday – Friday (Saturday by appointment only)

The Audiology and Speech-Pathology Service is located on the Ground Floor level of Building 90 at 590 Foothill Drive, East Of the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center main building. We have nine full-time audiologists, a part time professional assistant, one full time and one part time audiology technicians, several part-time audiologists, two clerks and a Clinic Chief.

Audiology provides diagnostic testing for hearing loss and medical problems related to hearing.

Hearing aids are provided for eligible veterans with fitting, counseling and troubleshooting. Specialized testing and services are performed for cochlear implant candidacy, tinnitus (head noise), dizziness and cerumen management. Appointments are available Monday through Friday with our Audiology Technicians for hearing aid repair. Audiology has a contract with the IHC Hearing and Balance Center for vestibular testing and rehabilitation and contract with Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho to provide services for our veterans who live in Southeast Idaho. There is a Hearing Aid Orientation Class every Tuesday well as a Tinnitus Management Group held each Wednesday. Call (801) 582-1565 ext. 4044 for more information.

St. George Community Based Outreach Clinic

Hours: 8:00 am -4:30 pm Monday - Thursday

We have a full time Audiology Clinic at the St. George VA Community Based Outreach Clinic which provides audio evaluations, hearing aid fittings, hearing aid trouble shooting, and follow-up appointments. That clinic currently runs from Monday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Shane Walker, Au.D. is the full time audiologist who runs that clinic. The clinic address is:

Pocatello, Idaho - Idaho State University Audiology Clinic  (Bldg. 68)

Audiology services for veterans living in southeast Idaho are provided by the Idaho State University contract clinic in Pocatello, Idaho. Providers must still send a consult for patients through the CPRS Audiology/Pocatello consult screen if they have not been seen at the contract clinic previously. Services include complete diagnostic assessments, hearing aid ordering, fitting, and follow-up. They have several audiologists who are credentialed and privileged through the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System to provide services to our veterans. Their address is as follows:

The Speech Pathology Service provides both inpatient and outpatient services to veterans. We have three full time Speech Pathologists and one full time Speech Pathology Clinical Fellow. Veterans with difficulty speaking, understanding language , voice disorders, or difficulty swallowing can receive evaluation and treatment by a Speech Pathologist. A speech pathology consult should be placed in CPRS, or you may contact one of the speech pathologists directly. Arrangements for appointments outside normal clinic hours can be made.
