2018 VA Farmers Market

Boxes full of fresh peaches

Fresh peaches are just one of the items you'll find at the VA Farmers Market.

The VA is in the midst of its annual summer Farmers Market. The event is being held every Wednesday from 11am to 2pm through September 5th. You will find it on the lawn outside building 8 on the campus of the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center. Everyone- patients, employees and the public- are welcome.

Fresh produce has the spotlight. If you love peaches, corn, berries, watermelon, jam and more, you will be in heaven at this farm stand. Last week’s peaches were picked off the tree that morning- you can’t get fresher than that!

Farmers Markets, like the VA Farmers Market, are huge step in creating a sustainable food system. By eating locally grown food, you reduce the number of miles that food travels to get to your plate. For the environment, this means less fuel is used, pollution is reduced, and the food does not require as much packing material. Not only does the environment thank you, but your body will too. By consuming food that is from local farms, you are eating it at its peak of freshness to offer the most nutritional content and the best taste. Finally, your farmers will thank you.

The fruits and veggies at the VA Farmers Market are perfect in conjunction with the market’s nutrition activities and recipe demonstrations which change every week. Some examples of recipes shown at the market are peach popsicles and pesto crostinis. They even have free recipe booklets available so you can test your skills at home. It’s a great way to learn something new and try something delicious.

The Farmer’s Market also features baked goods, chips and salsa, arts and crafts. Shop while you enjoy listening to the music played by our talented Veterans.

If you need lunch, we’ve got you covered with the food trucks or grilled lunch from the Veterans Canteen Service. Go with something classic, like a burger, or try some Jamaican food for something different.

The Farmer’s Market is a great place for both a quick lunch break or a place to hang around for a couple of hours. Get some sunshine and play Cornhole or Washer Toss while you enjoy the company of some awesome people. We hope to see you there next Wednesday.
