VA Salt Lake City Health Care System
Cooperative Studies Program (CSP)
The VA Cooperative Studies Program is the Division of VA Research and Development that is responsible for the planning and conduct of large multicenter clinical trials and epidemiological studies in the Department of Veterans Affairs.
To advance the health and care of Veterans through collaborative research studies that produce innovative and effective solutions to national healthcare problems.
To achieve this mission, the CSP has a clinical research infrastructure that operates under the management of Central Office in Washington, D.C. The CSP is comprised of professional experts at five data & statistical coordinating centers, a clinical research pharmacy coordinating center, and four epidemiological resource centers. Additionally, the CSP partners with the VA Health Economics Resource Center to perform economic analyses on its clinical trials.
Through collaborative efforts within VA and with other federal, international, university, and private industry partners, CSP accomplishments have included key research findings across a range of diseases and have helped to provide definitive evidence for clinical practice within the VA and the nation. From its initial beginnings in the 1940s, the CSP continues to be a national and international leader in clinical research.
Network of Dedicated Enrollment Sites (NODES)
CSP is sponsoring an initiative referred to as the Network of Dedicated Enrollment Sites (NODES). The goal is to establish a consortium of VA medical centers (VAMCs) that have teams (nodes) in place dedicated to conducting CSP studies to enhance the overall performance, compliance and management of CSP multi-site research. In addition, the nodes will work together to share best practices and provide local insights to CSP Central Office and CSP Centers on study design and related considerations that can help with study management and conduct.
