Veterans Transportation Service

Updated Veterans Transportation Service Information

Our Mission is to provide veterans with convenient and timely healthcare access and quality of care with transportation services to assist in overcoming access barriers. To increase transportation resources for all Veterans, reduce waste; provide a savings to the VAMC while conducting it in a safe, professional and compassionate manner.

Our Mission is the same! We must change how we operate to keep our veterans and staff safe.

Effective Immediately (as of June 1, 2020)

Operations for Veterans Transportation Services (VTS) and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) will be limited for transportation services. All veterans being transported to and from the facility WILL require a Travel Consult by the provider. Justification for transport is required for veterans who need face to face appointments or discharges. Currently we have drivers on station at the SLC VA and a driver in St. George and Idaho Falls. Pickups along the I-15 corridor can be arranged on van days for St George and Idaho Falls. All other areas (Price, Vernal, Richfield, Afton, Rock Springs, Logan, Elko, and Ely) will require a minimum of a one-week notice to plan to get the veteran to the facility. The Volunteer Driving staff cannot operate till we are in Phase 3. The veteran will be required to have a minimum stay of 3 days in SLC. Social distancing and masks are required during transportation.

Who’s Eligible?

All Veterans enrolled in VA Healthcare are eligible for the new transportation program but top priority will be given to Veterans with disabilities, wheel-chair bound, and cancer patients.

How do I schedule a ride? (as of June 1, 2020)

Veterans can schedule transportation through their VA Primary Care Provider or by calling the DAV/VTS offices at 801- 582-1565 extension 1027; or toll free at 800-613-4012 extensions 1027. Note: Transportation appointments must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance to ensure there is a seat reserved for you on the DAV/VTS vans that pickup along the I-15 corridor. All other routes require a minimum of 1 week to schedule. Due to COVID all Volunteer Drivers cannot operate, and a different resource will be required to get you to your appointment.

Am I eligible for travel reimbursement while riding the DAV VTN/VTS vehicles?

Since VA is providing this service free of charge, you cannot collect travel pay if eligible on the days you ride the DAV VTN/VTS vehicles.

Should I tip the drivers?

No – All volunteer and paid drivers are prohibited from accepting tips for the service they provide on the DAV VTN/VTS vehicles as this is a service free of charge to veterans.

Some routes provide wheelchair accessibility, contact the VTS / VTN offices for more information.
